At the UWE Bristol, students are able to undertake internships during the summer months and in the School of Applied Sciences we support our students to apply for projects undertaken with supervision by leading academics. Â These projects range from laboratory-based experimental projects to desk-based evaluations and field-based projects.
Internships are typically undertaken by students who have just completed their second year of undergraduate study however some internships offered at the University are open to all undergraduate students thus, we encourage students to utilise the careers hub job searching tools for any updates regarding available internships.

Equity Summer Internships—For global majority students to undertake a five-week remote working internships during the summer
The Summer Internship Scheme is a chance to participate in an eight-week, remote-working internship over the summer to gain valuable work experience in a range of employment sectors.
As well as getting a chance to build your skills and confidence, you’ll earn £351.50 a week (based on a 37-hour working week).
A UWE Graduate? In partnership with Santander, The Graduate Internship scheme is an opportunity to find an exciting opportunities in a safe environment to help improve your confidence, gain skills and try something new, while earning at least £366.30 a week, either for 8 weeks full time, or 16 weeks part time (296 hours).
If you are thinking about a future career in scientific research, a summer vacation project could give you a taste of life as a researcher. These projects provide experience of working on a laboratory-, field- or desk-based project, with students receiving bursary payments (usually £200-£300 per week) to fund them. Bursary schemes fund six to ten weeks of research work and are available for students who are between their second and final year of study.

My supervisor and I wanted to understand the opinions of staff and postgraduate students in the School of Applied Sciences about their experiences of teaching at UWE. Through a professional discussion and anonymous questionnaires, we were able to gain an insight into their views and opinions and observe similarities and differences between them. This was my first time working in a research environment, especially with a qualitative project, thus I was thrown into a world of terminology I didn’t quite understand at first. Our final report would be an autoethnographic report.
The overarching aim was to benefit postgraduate students by understanding what is needed to provide equity of teaching opportunity and the types of opportunities that are available. Our analysis highlighted a few themes: an unbalanced system, developing skills and self-awareness and informal practice.
I had to learn the qualitative side of scientific method based around experiences and words rather than just numerical data. Autoethnography allows the author to ‘add value’ to their own experiences and embed them into their research to reach conclusions related to their research topic. It allows you to personify your data to better understand the social groups you’re researching. I’m very grateful to have experienced the ‘other side’ of science and have gained a sense of purpose and awareness for what I will research in third year and in the future.

I undertook a research project assisting Beth Clark (PhD student) with the analyses of RNAseq data produced from morpholino treatment of cell lines. Morpholino oligonucleotides are used to block the translation of mRNA which can reduce the expression of a gene and, subsequently, protein expression. We treated different cell lines associated with cancerous proteins with morpholinos and performed common gene expression techniques (western blotting, protein quantification and polymerase chain reaction) to identify whether treatment had been successful. Initial results were not as expected so I carried out troubleshooting by further stripping of the blots and retesting at different concentrations to provide new visualizations. I developed many technical skills and gained experience of techniques that built upon and went beyond those that I had encountered so far during my degree. During my summer placement, I worked on a project that looks at the role of JAK/STAT signalling in cytokine-induced genotoxicity. This research is based on a condition called donor cell leukaemia (DCL). The aetiology of DCL is not known, although a chemotherapy-induced bystander effect may play a role. Following the induction of chemotherapy, patients experience a cytokine storm. Cytokines may play an important part in inducing mutagenesis and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, it is critical to assess their genotoxic capacity.
I tested 5 cytokines that are highly expressed within the bone marrow (TNFα, TGFβ1, IL6, G-CSF and GM-CSF). In doing so, I gained experience of cell culture, assays to quantify ROS activity, cell viability assays and the micronucleus assay used to assess genotoxicity.
This summer placement allowed me to develop and refine my skills needed for a career in research. I had the chance to learn from researchers and gain experience with new techniques. This has been a wonderful experience that has cemented my decision to pursue a career in research.

I attempted to summarise the effects COVID-19 has had on different animal populations, including non-human primates, domestic cats and dogs, mustelids and bats, by looking at published literature including scientific papers, articles and websites. This has been prepared as an article for the Animal Welfare Research Network (AWRN). In doing this, I hoped to understand how animals are being infected, how aggressive the illness is, how many deaths have occurred, how all these factors have a knock-on effect to the animals themselves and whether vaccine programs for animals work. Due to the immense amount of research and species’ I wanted to investigate, the article took a long time to produce but is currently in the final stages for imminent submission.  Â

Autophagy is a process that promotes cell survival by recycling unwanted proteins and other material within stressed or starving cells. It is thought that autophagy dysregulation contributes to the classic build-up of amyloid-b present in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s Disease. The overexpression of BCATc, a protein which normally plays a role in glutamate metabolism in the brain, may be associated with the autophagy dysregulation that occurs in Alzheimer’s Disease. Through the use of cell culture techniques and western blot analysis, I investigated the relationship between autophagy and BCATc. By inhibiting autophagy at different stages of the process and seeing how BCATc expression was affected, predictions could start to be made about the stages of autophagy that may become disrupted when BCATc is overexpressed within the brain. Undertaking a summer bursary project was a very enjoyable and interesting experience as it allowed me to broaden my laboratory skills by learning techniques I had never come across in the timetabled practical’s that are part of the Biomedical Science course. This project also allowed me to gain an insight into what conducting research and working in a laboratory environment is like.

My project has involved using citizen science data taken from Bristol and Baths City Nature Challenge, to explore species distributions. The distribution of species is where different species are found in an area, this knowledge can be used to better understand a species behaviour and the effects of the environment around them. It is really useful and interesting to have information on the distribution of species in the area, as it allows us to gain a better understanding of how and what environmental factors could be potentially influencing the species.  From this, conservation and environmental action can be taken to aid the species survival. It’s important to use citizen science events such as the City Nature Challenge to monitor and investigate species distributions as it allows for large data sets to be formed, but also encourages individuals to be engaged in the nature around them and learn about protecting nature, drawing attention to the harmful effects that species have to deal with, such as urbanisation and climate change.
The species which I have been focusing on in this project are the European robin and mute swans. These birds are both commonly known and have been observed a number of times within the region. Both species of bird are facing threats due to climate change and urbanisation. Mute swans are facing a far bigger threat from urbanisation, with pollutants and man-made structures such as overhead river cables causing serious harm to the species. To explore the data, I have used several packages in the programme R, to analyse the distribution of the species in the Bristol and Bath region.
